WebQuests
I like the concept of a webquest as a tool for students to dip their toe into the pool of online research. I think this could fall into the category of guided practice. I would probably do a series of webquests with a group of students, starting off with one that specifically controlled the different websites available. Then, eventually, I would want the students to be able to just go online and research a particular topic on their own as this is a very practical skill. The webquest is an awesome way to introduce some history into a math class as well. Approaching the Pythagorean Formula, for example, from a historical standpoint really brings home why some concepts in math were so revolutionary at the time and could breathe some life into an otherwise stale drill session of a^2+b^2=c^2.
