Portfolios

After class the other day, I started thinking about all the different types of portfolios and what a creative outlet it would be to create one. But then I realized that no matter what it looks like, the whole point of a portfolio is how you use it. I mean, if you collect a bunch of work together and call it a portfolio, that's only the beginning. Kind of like a stock portfolio, you ultimately want it to work for you. Going through a body of work and selecting items to showcase is a reflective exercise. While you are using the portfolio to showcase your work, someone else is using it to assess your work. This might make you want to re-examine the items you include in the portfolio. This whole give-and-take process ultimately produces the best body of work, otherwise you just have a folder of randomness sitting on your desk!

  1. You're right...a portfolio is what you make it. Whether your purpose is to collect your best work to show others, or show a work in progress, portfolios can be used in a variety of ways.
